Professional Help for your Golf Game

 For help with legal issues you call a lawyer; medical needs - a doctor;
and for help fixing your golf game, who do you call?

While driving during the holidays, I was listening to sports radio and the discussion centered on the recent naming of college football’s player of the year, winner of the Heisman Trophy. The commentator stated that forever the words, “Heisman Trophy winner” would follow Sam Bradford’s name when mentioned. He went on to say that the same was true for all luminaries, Prime Ministers, Presidents, Hall of Famers, etc.

It occurred to me that beginning this year, for 30 years the line "PGA Professional" has followed my name and the sound of that fills me with great pride.  The letters PGA for the Professional Golfers Association tell others that I have a recognized credential in the game and business of golf. That credential is acknowledged worldwide by golfers and carries with it a responsibility to play the game at a high level and the ability to help others enjoy the game. Most importantly, it signals that golf is my career.

The journey that allows me and others to use those three letters following our name is long and challenging. It involves an old fashioned apprenticeship that can last as long as three years, longer than reasonable working hours and below acceptable compensation. Couple this with extensive schooling and stringent examinations and you begin to see the considerable sacrifice a young person makes to become a PGA Professional.

    I share all this with you because your love of the game of golf is matched, if not exceeded, by the dedication and passion for the game that fuels a commitment shared by every PGA Professional. My hope is that this year when you seek guidance on how to improve your golf game that you will seek the services of a PGA Professional. You will find that he or she has all the skills needed to help you improve. They will have the abilities to teach you a better technique, make sure that your equipment is well suited and even identify the best constructed golf ball for your style of game, launch angle, club head speed, etc. They will even provide fashion suggestions if asked.

If a doctor is the best source for medical help and a lawyer is best to assist in navigating legal challenges, then rest assured that for all your golf needs, a PGA Professional is the answer.

Oh and by the way, over these last thirty years my life has been greatly enriched by the amazing people in the game and business of golf that share that bond of being a PGA member. I suspect you’ll find knowing a PGA Professional will also add value to your life.

Enjoy the greatest of games,
