 ANSWER: QUESTION #10

Which golfer holds the record for most consecutive weeks at the top of the Official World Golf Rankings? And how many weeks did he/she spend at the top to hold that record?

ANSWER: The Official World Golf Rankings is a system used for rating the performance of male professional golfers and is endorsed by the four Major Championships and the six Professional Tours. Tiger Woods holds the record for most consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the OWGR at 264 weeks and while in that position won seven of the eleven Major Championships.

 ANSWER: QUESTION #9

In 2003 at the Presidents Cup in South Africa, with the matches tied at the end of regulation, Ernie Els and Tiger Woods set off for a head-to-head sudden death playoff.

Describe the rule of play unique to the Presidents Cup that resulted from this surprising tie between the International and United States teams at the 2003 Presidents Cup match in South Africa?

ANSWER: After the 2003 Presidents Cup ended in a tie, the rules were revised for ties with respect to both team points and singles matches. The revised rules stated that in the case of an overall tie in points, both teams will share the cup and if the singles matches are tied after 18 holes, the points will not be halved but the match will be extended to extra holes until it is won outright by a full point.

 ANSWER: QUESTION #8

What do the winners of the majors receive? Name each major and its coveted prize.

ANSWER: The winner of the Open Championship (British Open) receives the Claret Jug. The winner of the U.S. Open receives the U.S. Open Championship Cup Trophy. The winner of the Masters Tournament receives the Green Jacket and the winner of the PGA Championship receives the Wanamaker Trophy.

 ANSWER: QUESTION #7

What is match play and what is stroke play?

ANSWER: In Match Play the game is played by holes. A match consists of one side playing against another over a stipulated round. The match will be won when one side leads by a number of holes greater than the number remaining to be played. During Stroke Play the competitor who plays the round or rounds in the fewest strokes is the winner.

 ANSWER: QUESTION #6

Which sub-20 tour player reportedly has sponsorship agreements with both Nike and Sony worth more than $10,000,000 per year?

ANSWER: Michelle Wie!  Born 1989, this 16-year-old isn't even officially a member of the LPGA tour, but was the youngest player ever to win a USGA event... among other things.

 ANSWER: QUESTION #5

To warn other players of thie impending doom from a wild golf shot, we customarily yell "fore"!  To non-golfers this is a strange term when "look out", "duck" or "heads up" may seem more natural to yell in a time of crisis.  Everyone does it, but do you know why we do yell fore?

ANSWER: The "Fore!" warning most likely originated from the British military artillery officers - who were usually golfers. In battle, to warn the foot soldiers when the cannons were about to be fired over their heads they would yell "fore." This habit then naturally carried over onto the golf course when they needed to warn fellow golfers of an errant golf shot.

ANSWER: QUESTION #4

In 1800, what was the difference between a 'links' course and a 'greens' course?

ANSWER: Until 1766 all the known golf courses (links) were found along the coastline of Scotland. Golf courses built inland in the eighteenth century were called "greens," to distinguish them from a "links" style course located by the ocean. This gave rise to many of the common golf terms still in use today: greenskeeper, greens chairman, greens committee and greens fee.

 ANSWER: QUESTION #3

Why is a fairway called a 'fairway'?

ANSWER: The term "fairway" is an old nautical term for a long waterway between rocks. The sailors walking from the ships to the nearby pubs adapted this term to the land where they played golf between the sand dunes.

 ANSWER: QUESTION #2

The first Masters in 1934 was played back-to-front by today's standards, with play starting on what is now the 10th tee, and finishing on the 9th.

What was the reason for switching the course to the order it is today?

ANSWER: The first ever Masters, in 1934, was played back-to-front, with play starting on what is now the 10th tee, and finishing on the 9th. Play was switched after members noticed that the lowest part of the course, around Amen Corner, still had ground frost late into the morning, so the holes had a chance to thaw before golfers reached them.

 ANSWER: QUESTION #1

The first and arguably most prestigious major tournament of the new golf season is here! Bobby Jones' Masters Invitation is in its 73rd year at the Augusta National golf course in Georgia being held from April 2nd to 8th, 2007.

As part of tradition, the final round of the Masters each year is held on the second Sunday in April.  But do you know why this is?  More specifically, why did the tournament's organizing committee decide to hold the tournament in Georgia in the early spring?

Hint... it doesn't have anything to do with the weather or course conditions.

ANSWER: The Masters has an early spring date so that members of the Press would be able to conveniently stop over in Georgia on their way back north from Florida, where they had been covering Major League Baseball's spring training camps.
