How to Get Out of the Sand – Every Time!

Under the warm sun on a beach in Bermuda, sand can be your best friend.  It’s comfortable, and it matches perfectly with those crystal blue waves rolling in.  On the golf course, however, it’s a different story.

One of the most dreaded shots in golf is that pesky sand shot.  We have all ‘thinned one,’ grazing the pant leg of that poor playing partner, and causing their heart to race for at least the next few holes.  More than anything, sand shots are about confidence, so practice is absolutely key.  But if you are going to practice, then let’s at least make sure that you are exercising the proper technique.

The key to a successful bunker shot is preparation. Before you think about making a swing, dig your feet into the sand with a stance that is approximately 45 degrees ‘open’ so that your chest is angled more toward the target.  Position the ball in the middle to front of your stance.  Make sure that the club face is angled directly at the target – this should mean that the face is ‘open’.  Focus your eyes at a point 2-3 inches behind the ball.  This technique should safeguard your beloved playing partner from otherwise imminent doom.

Now for the good news – you are prepared and the hard part is over.  Now it’s easy – just swing.

Practice this technique, build your confidence, and get out of the bunker every time!
